Finding free, quality events in London may be like searching for the proverbial needle in the haystack but every so often something comes along to make your wallet smile.

Earlier this year, March 17th 2009 to be precise, a free film event took place at the Rich Mix arts centre in east London. If you regularly travel on the London Underground on a Thursday you may be familiar with the Shortlist magazine and it’s array of wild and wonderful competitions. It so happened that in the run up to St. Patrick’s Day, the Jameson Cult Film Club was giving out tickets to two simultaneous film screenings. You would think given the date that the films on offer would have something to do with Ireland or Irishness but no, they were showing the zombie films Shaun of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead. A strange decision some may say. Strange also was the choice of the completely non-Irish music in the bar before the screenings. It was as if the patron saint’s only representation was to be found in liquid form behind the bar. However the films were free as were a handful of whiskey cocktails so not only was the event well attended but no one seemed at all put out by the lack of patriotism on show.

Jameson Cult Film Club Offerings for Halloween

Fastforward to October and the Jameson Cult Film Club has made a reappearance. At least now it’s the right time of year for a zombie film or two so how wonderful it is that they planned a short series of films over the Halloween period and yet again, the screenings and drinks will be on the house.

The best bit about the most recent screenings was that they were shown at the lovely Union Chapel in Islington. This isn’t a hip name for a club, it is a real and working place of worship in north London. During the week Union Chapel is used for other live performances and in spite of the religious overtones the gothic architecture was a perfect fit for the seasonal spooky ambience. On stage, a few prop coffins, severed heads and clouds of dry ice created a bona fide haunted house (or in this case, church). Upstairs in the back room the bar was in full flow, where coupons (two per person) could be exchanged for Mule cocktails and coco cola mixers. At the back of the room a smiling lady handed out small cones of popcorn from a fairground cart.

The films on offer for the mini Halloween festival were An American Werewolf in London, Dracula, Halloween and the much lesser know and new zombie film, Colin. Earlier in October they hosted a screening of Trainspotting at the Village Underground in Shoreditch and coming up in December is This Is Spinal Tap at the Clapham Grand.

It’s good to see that the Jameson Cult Film Club is still going strong and long may it continue. London is a city where you rarely get something for nothing, especially something good.
