7 Inch Cinema's Travelling Picture Show 2009A West Midlands Film Festival for Children Launched at Flatpack
7 Inch cinema are the proud hosts of a colourful festival of international children's film which will be screened in venues around the West Midlands this summer.
Events are based upon the classic matinee experience of the fifties and sixties as the tour brings The Red Balloon by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse back onto the cinema screen over fifty years after it was first shown. This enchanting feature sits alongside modern animations about cats and creepy crawlies, a diverse selection of shorts, music videos and workshops. Travelling Picture Show Venues and Dates Including the Electric Cinema BirminghamThe tour kicks off at Lichfield festival on the 18th July before making its way to The Lighthouse Wolverhampton on the 22nd July, Number 8 in Pershore between the 23rd and 30th July, The Artrix in Bromsgrove on the 25th July and 1st August and Staffordshire's beautiful Shire Hall Gallery also on the 25th July and 19th September. After a summer break in August, the tour will continue to The Hive in Shrewsbury on the 13th September, Hereford's Courtyard Arts Centre on the 26th September and The community run Market Theatre in Ledbury on the 19th September. Finally there will be a special gala screening at The Electric in Birmingham on 25th October, this is the oldest running cinema in the UK. Director Tsuneo Goda has created a feature version of a Japanese TV series, using technical skill to bring charming hand made characters to life. The simple narrative of The Red Balloon will send the aging voyeur, joyfully to the realm of childhood, a place where magic realism defines the friendship between Pascal and a mute shiny balloon. This Oscar winning film is packed with moral value for the child who dreams of hope and freedom in a world riddled with bullies. Outstanding International Short Film Selection for Children from KLFG no. 5 to Don't Let it all Unravel Sadly, many short films are left unseen on the shelf. The Travelling Picture Show strives to rectify this by showcasing a variety of short films from a predominantly European market. The Bugs and Beasts programme includes The Happy Duckling, an eight minute UK short about a young boy, living in a pop up book world, where he has to use every flap and tab to escape from an inquisitive duck. Also to be seen is an amusing Hungarian short by Alexei Alexeyev called KLFG no. 5 in which a musical trio of unlikely animals are interrupted by the wandering hunter. The Fantastic Planet selection includes a film by Sally Pearce, called Elephants, about a lonely child who's grey and dreary existence is transformed when her house in infested with elephants who can't be seen as they crash about in the night. Also outstanding is Don't Let it all Unravel, a striking two minute short which uses a knitted thread to depict the destruction of our planet. A Fun and Diverse Day Out for all the Family and Film Lovers this Summer 2009Along with activities and giveaways, the Magic Box workshops will allow children to create a real animated chain film, to be screened at the closing gala. Supported by the National Lottery through ScreenWM and First Light Movies, this unique film festival will serve up welcome variety to any child's cinematic diet.
